BJP installs drop box, urges civic election aspirants to apply

The BJP has set up a drop box outside its central Kolkata state party headquarters to invite applications from potential candidates for the upcoming civic elections in the state, anticipated to take place in mid-April.

A senior BJP leader stated, “Common individuals who enjoy popularity in their localities, possess a good reputation, and aspire to become BJP candidates for civic polls are encouraged to submit their biodata for consideration. The party will assess these applications and make decisions based on identifying suitable candidates. This drop box is intended to facilitate those aspiring to become representatives of the people.”

He further mentioned that similar drop boxes would be placed outside the party’s district offices. Party sources indicated that preference would be given to applicants with an untarnished image and a commitment to serving the public. Rahul Sinha, BJP national secretary, emphasized the democratic right of everyone to contest polls, stating that the drop box provides an opportunity for anyone aspiring to run under the party’s banner, regardless of party affiliation.

Responding to this initiative, senior TMC leader and state minister Firhad Hakim criticized the BJP, stating, “They have stooped so low that now they need to have a drop box. They are not getting candidates to contest and, therefore, the drop box.”

Congress MLA Monoj Chakraborty expressed skepticism, suggesting that the box would struggle to receive a sufficient number of applications.
